Adobe Systems has announced the release of Adobe Reader 8, the latest major release of their free Portable Document Format (PDF) readers software for Mac OS X and Windows.
New features in Adobe Reader 8 include support for Adobe Acrobat Connect, an online collaboration service that works using Flash. A new streamlined interface features user-customizable toolbars, and Reader users can fill and submit forms, save data and digitally sign documents. The software also features graphics acceleration on supported systems.
It’s the first Intel-native version of Adobe Reader to be released. It’s worth noting that the Intel-optimized version is a separate download from its PowerPC counterpart, which may cause some confusion for Mac users and IT personnel who have grown accustomed to Universal binaries, which combine PowerPC and Intel optimizations into a single application.
Adobe Reader 8 is available in English, French, German and Japanese versions. Chinese and Korean releases are coming in early 2007. Available for Mac OS X and windows, Adobe Reader 8 is also coming for Linux, HP/UX, AIX and Solaris operating systems in 2007.
System requirements call for a G3 or better processor, Mac OS X v10.4.3 or later, 128MB RAM, 110MB hard disk drive space and Apple Safari 2.0.2.

This is the first pdf viewer that I found that will update its view of a document automatically if I regenerate it. Unfortunately, it doesn't remember that setting, though it does remember other facts about the document, so if I start a new session of editing, I have to tell PDFViewer that 'Auto': update your display whenever the document changes. Other than that, lovely app. Does all it needs to, and none of the superfluous crap that bogs down the Adobe viewer.

I have been looking for a program like this for a *long* time. Apple never got their act together with their 'Preview' application - it sucks. Takes way too long to open files, trys to make previews of every page in the file (no way to turn this off by default, you have to close the drawer EVERY TIME), and it never opens things to a reasonable size by default, so you always have to resize. Adobe Acrobat reader works fine once you have it open, but it's kind of a beast - large and takes a long time to launch. PDFViewer 1.4 is much nicer. ;-) It opens things to a nice viewing size by default, doensn't waste time creating previews, and is damn fast. My only suggestion so far would be to allow the user to click and drag the on the image like you can do with most other PDF viewers. Thanks for writing such a nice simple application which really serves a need of the Mac community.

..this is a very 'lite' alternative to the Adobe product and Apple's Preview. I recommend it for previewing small PDF files, but if you are doing professional work or viewing multipage files, then I use Preview or, better yet, Acrobat Reader 5. The text rendering in PDFViewer isn't as nice as in Acrobat, but if previewing a file quickly is the issue, then looks don't really matter. Now if only Apple could provide better Help for and/or keyboard shortcuts for

Just as it says: light, quick, small PDF viewer. Much faster than Preview, and **MUCH** less bulky than Adobe Reader. Not the most feature-rich app, but I don't need a PDF viewer that checks my email.. it has everything that's needed; nothing more, nothing less.

Adobe acrobat never works in Safari, this little gem does. For all those whiners and complainers; use Acrobat it's free too! This is a great solution for when Acrobat is too much trouble or, as in the case of Safari, doesn't work. Acrobat 6 is over 60 megs and takes a while to load. This little app is clean and does the job nicely.

For the ones saying that this makes bad rendering or is slow, I'd love to see which reader are they using. I've had lots of problems with Acrobat eating math symbols in one version and working just fine in a previous version! This has worked OK for me until now. And is much faster than Acrobat (I'm using a 400MHz G3) This scrolls perfectly fast (and with mouse wheel too!) and zooms OK. Only problem: you can't search or select/copy/save. You just can read. But that's OK for me 75% of the time.. so being really fast to launch and open PDFs and still being free, it's almost perfect.

I opened a PDF file (a 'Science' article with text and graphics) with PDFViewer, Preview, and Adobe Reader. PDFViewer's text and graphics were both really crappy compared with the two other viewers.
Cac card reader for mac installation. It *IS* faster, but I spend most of my time reading, not paging. Besides, both Adobe Reader and Preview have page thumbnails, making navigation much more convenient.
Zoom control is primitive. One cannot choose the magnification, and there is no 'Zoom to fill window' option.

Great App, now in version 1.1 the setting of the default for PDFs now works (little bit tricky: you have to delete the preference com.apple.LaunchServices.plist in your users library folder) - this app lets my smiling get wider - its definitely the fastest PDF viewer tool ever - Thanks a lot!!

i like it very much. especially the auto-zoom (on window resize) function. needs key-shortcuts at least for 'next page' / 'prev page'.
